Canterbury City Council Elections

By Zdravka Uzunova

VOTERS in Canterbury go to the polls tomorrow to elect members of the City Council.

This time it has had an added dimension because voters are also being asked to decide whether they would like to see a change in the system  in the city. But for many people the election process remains a mystery and here Canterbury News gives a bit  more information and explains how the system  works.

People will have to choose among 50 new City Councillors on Thursday 5 May. Some of them of course have participated in the elections and in 2007, when the last City Council elections were. Other are new candidates. The new chosen Councillors are going to split across 24 wards, either small or large. Depends on how big the ward is, three, two or one councillor will be responsible for it. Voters are going to be able to make their choice between 7 am and 10 pm on Mat, 5th . Poll cards have been sent to people who are going to vote and the places where they should go and elect are also mentioned on the cards.

When has been asked, when are the new councillors stepping into position, Rob Davies, Press Officer says: "They become almost immediately, after a legal process, signing a declaration. The results will be counted from 9 o'clock on Friday morning at the West Gate Hall.

The first results are expecting to be announced around 11 o'clock.
